Modern ways of looking at deviance: strain theory- functionalism. Associated with functionalism: goal means gap. As the gap gets wider, the potential for deviance gets higher: illegitimate opportunity. As strain gets greater, probability of deviance goes up. Modern ways of looking at deviance (cont. : control theory- conflict/ marxist theory, social bond and self control. Tighter bonds we have, the more self control we have: reintegrative shaming. Refers to the threat of punishment: aspect of control theory, learning theory, differential association, differential reinforcement- bobo the clown.
