SOC 2020 test 3.2 • Black women = 35% higher sexual violence than white women • 1 in 6 women will be victim or survivors of interpersonal violence • 2 in 5 gay or bi men experience intimate partner violence • 40% of black women report coercive contact of a sexual nature by age 18 • 1 in 33 men will be survivors of sexual violence • 1 in 8 lesbian women will be victims of IPV • 43% of dating college women experience IPV Rape/ sexual assault Cause= Power • violence---- asymmetrical power relationship o 1 person has more power over the other person • Violence erupting from an attempt by one party to establish or reestablish a position of power over the other party • Always about power and control Rape • As of 2013: penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with anybody part of object, oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim • Forcible rape is notoriously unreported • “Aggravated” o rape that takes place by force of threat of force o don’t know each other o usually a weapon • “Simple” o date rape o acquaintance o alcohol or drugs Social contstruction of rape • can rape be both violence and sex? • For some, sex and violence are coterminous; rape is sexual because it is violent…. Or may be sex to the perp and rape to the victim and to the law, as well as to much of the public • Most exclusive definition of rape: rape doesn’t exist • Most inclusive view of rape: all heterosexual intercourse is rape • Moderately exclusive view and the moderately inclusive view, which together hold the views of the majority of Americans • Moderately inclusive view includes more simple version Why rape? • Rape is instrumental to gain access to otherwise unattainable women • For immediate gratification of desires • Use of power and control to subdue and humiliate Causes:
