Delinquency is motivated: roots of labeling: symbolic interaction. Normal individual"s behavior is viewed as a problem. Stigma and deviant self-image develop (role taking) and individual labeled as deviant. Deviant group initiates its own norms and attitudes. Creates more crime and delinquency: lemert"s labeling perspective. Started with tannenbaum"s argument, but introduced deviance amplification : original cause of deviance (not explained, primary deviance (not too serious, negative reaction by society or community, adoption of delinquent/deviant identity, secondary deviance (more serious, empirical evidence generally suggests: Official justice system labeling in some cases enhances delinquency but the effects are very small. On the whole, official sanctions do not have a substantial labeling effect when other factors are taken into account (e. g. prior offenses, social characteristics, propensities, etc. : the mark of a criminal record. Criminal record either: leads to no job, which increases likelihood of internalizing criminal label, or immediately leads to internalization of criminal label. Policy implications: lemert: the less said, the better .
