Early modern europe: social structure, political changes, economic and physical expansion, cultural developments, religious change and conflict. Divided into three casts- priest, knight, everyone else (those who work) Those who pray were a small part of the population. Women could be nuns, queens, noble women. Changing roles of women: noble/fighting class men die off, providing room for social shifts. Serf- like a slave, but is entitled to the land lived on, cannot move up in society. Women had a place in the marketplace. To stay king, had to get people to believe him. Get people to believe noble people were better: knights can physically remove the king. In return get money, power, glory, whatever they want to keep king in throne. Decentralized system: constant overthrow of king. Emergence of absolute rule: much better at collecting taxes. God helped rulers stay in power, god said i am the king.
