Document Summary
Definition: a system of beliefs expressed as symbols & behaviors related to. Defined as people"s attempts to compel supernatural forces & beings to act in certain ways. Evolution model: magic comes first, replaced by religion and then replaced by science. Neither an archaic thing of the past, nor exclusive to religion or superstition. We rely on symbolic representations & causal relationships to make sense of the world & how it works. The relationship between symbols & what they stand for are arbitrary & those of causes & what they effect are assumed since we do not have access to connection of cause & effect. Private vs collective distinction- spirituality is a private religious experience whereas religion is a socially shared symbolic system. Form vs content distinction- religion is a form (tradition, rites & rituals) spirituality content (feelings, experiences, communion, visions)
