Political anthropology is the cross culture study of power and related concepts such as influence and authority. Defines key concepts different than political scientist do. Power: the capacity to bring results through possession or forceful means. Influence: the ability to achieve a desired end by exerting social or moral pressure on someone/group. Between 20 & a few hundred members. Leader is first among equals, influential but has no sustained power. Leader resolves conflicts, relies on influence, authority & power. A centralized political unit encompassing many communities, a bureaucratic structure, & leaders who possess power. Are secondary social organizations in the sense that no members know all other members on a face-to- face basis; kinship in not the primary basis of membership. Engage in international relations, use of force to maintain law & order. Maintain armies, define rights, citizenships & responsibilities. Keep track of citizens, taxations, control information & provide social services.
