Document Summary
One of biggest problems in health habit modification: can occur in people who make own changes or those who join programs. Genetic factors, withdrawal effects, conditioned association between cues and response. More likely with low self efficacy, when goals aren"t established, with people who have little social support. More likely when depressed, anxious, or stressed. Particular moment when people are vulnerable is abstinence violation effect: a feeling of loss of control that results when a person violated self imposed rules resulting in more serious relapse (that first cigarette or fattening food) Negative emotions, disappointment, frustration, anger, reduced sense of self efficacy, feeling of 0 control over habit. Sometimes may have paradoxical effects leading to perceive they can control habits to a degree and help acquire useful info about habit and learn to prevent relapse in future. Booster sessions following termination of initial treatment phase (e. g. attending diet meeting after all sessions are over to weigh in)
