Document Summary

First major war between western powers no longer west vs. east. Key dates: 461-446 first peloponnesian war. First battle between athens and spartans in 457: 446-431 peace. Sparta is dealing with a helot revolt and an earthquake. Athens has an increase in ally revolts. Was supposed to last for thirty years. Returns greece to status quo of 461 which means the first war didn"t create any change. Athenian power is growing and sparta is becoming more scared: 431-421 archidamian war. Corinthians think that athens is not following the thirty year peace plan. Begins because an athenian ally attacks a spartan ally. Athenian plague wipes out about two thirds of the population. Sort of stalemate in southern and northern greece: 421-413 peace of nicias. Brought on by the death of the two main military leaders. Weak because it returns greece to status quo again. Isn"t signed by all of the spartan allies: 415 attack of melos.
