AST 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Vacuum Tube, Photon, Eyepiece
Document Summary
Ast 111-lect 8: the nature of light /optics and telescopes. Light has properties of both waves and particles. The wave model of light could not explain the shape of blackbody curves. Planck suggested electromagnetic energy is transmitted y discrete particlelike packets called photons. The energy of each photon depends on its frequency: e= h : h is planck"s constant, and is the frequency a planck and a blackbody curve are the same curve, just different ways of measuring it. Einstein further developed the photoelectric effect : inside a vacuum tube, an electric current can be generated by shining electricity on a photocathode. Each chemical element produces its own set of spectral lines. Violet light produces energy, while red light does not. Types of spectra: continuous, emission line, absorption line. When the chemical is excited, it is the light that is bounced through a prism, and is the remaining colors.
