We (as adults) tend to believe nonverbal over verbal. People who don"t pick up nonverbal cues tend to have a hard time in relationships. Adults are very nonverbal: children are the opposite. Why do we believe the nonverbal: 1. Words are limited/our ability to express with words is limited: 2. But different cultures have different display rules: display rules govern what nonverbals are appropriate as, emotion adults. Marginally expressed nonverbally: relational meaning, 3. Rule governed: display rules set by culture, learned throughout life, 4. Non-linguistic: hard to explain using words, 7. Multi-channeled: can involve voice, expression, body language, environment, etc. We vary in our ability to encode/decode nonverbals: generally, females are better than males at this.
