- Over 200 women are in prison and jail in the US
- More than one million women are under crj supervision
- The number of women in prison has grown by over 800% in the past three decades
- Two-thirds of women in prison are there for non-violent offenses, many drug-related
crimes
- Together, property crimes - non-violent crimes - make up nearly ⅔ of the population of
women in prison
- In the five-year period from 2010 to 2015, arrests of women for drug violations increased
by 29%, compared to 15% for men
- Women prisons aren't as overpopulated as male prisons, there's more room for
inmates to come in which also leads to longer sentencing
- Nearly ⅔ of women in prison are mothers
- 75% of incarcerated mothers reported providing most of the daily care for their child(ren)
before incarceration
- 11% of incarcerated mothers reported their children being placed in foster care, compared
to only 2% of fathers
- Most children are likely to be placed with their maternal grandmother
- Women of Color:
- Women of color are disproportionately represented in prison
- White women: 45.5%
- Black women: 32.6%
- Hispanic women: 16%
- Women in prison are largely in their 30s and 40s
- 51% of sentenced women were between the ages of 30-44, with 36% of those between
the ages of 35-39 at midyear 2015
- The CRJ system has been growing over the last 30 years
- Women continue to be the “minority” representing about 20% of felons and 9% of
prisoners
- Women make up about 40% of victims of violent crime
- The majority of work is geared towards men (penal codes, facility designs, theories,
sentencing guidelines, CRJ studies, etc.)
- Law enforcement employees: ¼ women
- 10% of uniformed officers are female
- Corrections: 30% of employees are women
- 20% of line correctional officers are women
