Module 2 North American Indian Music Sound Instruments (p. 25) NativeAmericans created sounds in organic and folk way Navajo flute: primary melody-playing instrument (melody is not as dominant as rhythms), wooded instrument, holes cut into it, blow into it Container rattles: typically a gourd, pot or container of hide or bake or some kind with a rattle element (pebbles, sacred corn or beans) – played in circular motion. – makes rattling sound, different sounds for each object, not necessarily shaken Suspension rattles: deer hooves or shells suspended from a stick….hung things that clatter in wind (mobiles) Rasps: noticed sticks of wood – rubbed to make a rasping sound. – take one of sticks of wood and carve little notches in it, consistent amount of space between them Drums: wood with one or two heads of deer or another animal skin.Also log drums and/or pottery or drum jars are used. (create heads for drums with animal skin, dried and stretched on wood sides that are hollow, hollow sound), pottery or drum jars can be used Songs Never independent concept, always part of dance, celebration, games, work, or prayer Not composed, but received – coming from spiritual world – catch them in the wind Sung in ***unison (all singing the same note at the same time) – all NativeAmerican songs generally sung this way Call-and-response: solo voice alternating with group – sung back and forth ********, solo voice sings and group of people respond (example – military drills, repetition of what leader sung to them) Never harmony in the western sense – we add notes for the purpose of making certain songs Texts (very little text) Repetitions of one or more phrases or partial phrases – can create a hypnotic effect. **Vocables: neutral syllabus, such as hey, yeh, or neh. (used or repeated many times), percussive, rhythmic, melodic, no meaning Yeibichai Chant Song: Call of the Yei: Hi ye, hi ye, ho-ho ho ho! Sioux Grass Dance: strong pulses, high pitches in falsetto range, tense quality of voices. (meters or regular pulse? Figure that out…false voice, men sing very high and high past normal male sound, it’s a unique sound…creates a lot of tension) Powwows – gathering for singing, dancing, rodeo, carnival, and other celebrations. (One of the largest powwows on campus on Veteran’s Day weekend – NativeAmericans sell jewelry and other things symbolic of tribes, dance competitions, singing competitions, food) Composers/Musicians: (combined Native sounds with contemporary sounds) Carlos Nakai (flute, sound sculpture – takes sounds that aren’t considered music and creates th pieces with them) 20 century – all sound can be used for music John Kim Bell (conductor, composer) Edward Wapp (composer) Louis Ballard (composer, sounds ofAmerican Indian instruments with Symphony orchestra), written symphonies, integration of sounds that he used and combined Describe music – tell me what you hear (what sounds you’re hearing, high/low range, what is melody like, people singing high or low, is there a pulse or meter, duple or triple meter, is it irregular, what are lyrics doing and how do they relate to music, what is happening lyrically, connection between music and lyrics) Tell me if you like or dislike the song (sometimes you’ll like or dislike certain aspects of
