Spe 222- lecture 1: overview of today"s special education. Best buddies is a nationwide program that incorporates normal learners with exceptional learners to create a circle of friendship. Others are inclusive, but the range varies. Some students experience rejection by peers and even teachers. Everybody, at some point in their lives, deals with an exceptionality. No cost to parents: paid for by taxpayers, very expensive. Preschool children: 3-5 years old, received early childhood services approx 6 million students aged 6-21 received special education services. 67% male, 33% female: more genetic traits affect males more because their chromosomes are different, cultural, people view boys being boys as being special needs/adhd. Labeling to get special education, you must be labeled. Historically 2 types of discrimination: exclusion, misclassification. Brown v. board of education 1954: desegregation of public schools, didn"t really happen until the civil rights movement.
