Opera seria (early 18th century)- (cid:862)serious opera(cid:863: highly formalized, reflected hierarchies of society- kings and heroes. Comic opera (later 18th century)- ballad opera (england), singspiel (germany), opera comique (france), opera buffa (italy: simpler style, reflected human emotions more realistically, ensemble numbers, humor, popular tunes. Buffo- comedy actor, usually bass, that often communicated directly with the audience. Combines elements of opera buffa with opera seria. Set to libretto by lorenzo da ponte. Based on the tale of don juan. Begins with overture in sonata- allegro form, employing themes easily associated with the characters in the opera. Main classical sacred genres: mass, oratorio, and requiem mass: combinations of voices and instruments; expansive works, found audience in the concert hall.
