Family therapy : what the person is doing and how it affects the family as a unit. Self-help groups : people who are motivated to get back on their own tracks. Does therapy work: clients report bene ts from therapy. Depression takes 4-5 months: evidence-based practice: Using skills that have been statistically shown they work with a certain condition. #1 thing that shows whether it works or not is the relationship between the client and therapist. Biomedical therapies : physically changing the brain by altering its chemistry. Drug therapy : psychopharmacology, antipsychotic drugs (thorazine, 1950s): Negative side effects reduces dopamine: anti-anxiety drugs (xanax, ativah): Combine w/ psychotherapy reduce symptoms, but may not resolve underlying problem: antidepressant drugs (prozac): treat depression, anxiety, ocd increase norepinephrine and/or serotonin. Negative side effects take 2-8 weeks to work: dry mouth, weight gain, hypertension, dizziness, lack of sexual desire. Best for severe depression: mood stabilizing drugs:
