COMM 210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Eye Contact, Communication Apprehension, Systematic Desensitization
Document Summary
A broad based fear or anxiety because of real or anticipated interpersonal communication. Context-based: fear of talking about your topic maybe because it"s controversial or you don"t know a lot about it, pick something you are passionate about! Audience-based: fear of talking in front of people, or a specific group of people. Situational: fear of talking in the situation, ex] speech class, debate. Mental rehearsal script about how your day goes. Focus on your breathing breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. It makes us aware and on our toes. You will feel more nervous than you look. The key is to not say you"re nervous, if you don"t say it then the audience won"t know. Have a friend in the audience you can talk to. We are still sending messages even if we aren"t talking. Smile non-aggressively: do not smile too often.
