Three major aspects of american policing evolved from the english legal tradition. In 1829 the metropolitan police act (mpa) is passed in parliament while sir robert. Creates first organized police force of over 1,000 men. Reduces conflict between the public and the police. Show efficiency through the absence of crime and disorder. Colonists drew english roots and adopted the offices. Watch systems was primary means of order maintenance. New york city creates first full-time paid police force. By 1850 most major cities had some form of policing. Police duties included foot patrol, service, and handling emergencies. Chief of police in california and part of progressive movement to get rid of government in policing. Members should be well-trained, disciplined, and tightly organized. The main task of policing is crime fighting. Federal assistance to local and state agencies to fight the war on crime. Recruitment and promotion of women and minorities increased. Concepts of communities and problem oriented policing emerged.
