There are many factors that determine who is hired. Departments are becoming more diverse and actively seek to recruit more women and minorities. Since the 1970"s the percentage of minority group members and women has doubled. Now constitute 40% of officers is nation"s largest cities, dramatic change over past two decades. Court decisions opened up police work for women by prohibiting job assignments by gender. Research finds males and females perform in similar ways. Most states require preservice training usually a police academy. Defines the officer"s world and each officer"s role in it. Four key issues in understanding the police subculture. Patrol, investigations, traffic, control, vice, juvenile and so on. Maintaining an appropriate balance between line and staff duties. Investigative process depends on initial information and evidence. Patrol often investigates in place of or in support of detectives. Scientific analysis of dna, fingerprints, blood, semen, hair, soil, weapons and other materials. Helps prosecutors convince jurors that a suspect(s) is guilty.
