Symbols are parts of common speech we use these without thinking. Few stories are ruined if the symbolism is only hinted at but a story can be ruined if it"s shoved in the reader"s face. The theme is the portion of any narrative work that comments on the human condition usually implied rather than stated. Theme is developed subtly in sophisticated fiction in a writing journal maybe describe your theme in a sentence and see how you can bring that theme to fruition in the piece itself. Themes can use revision in some cases truisms, for instance, where it"s a duh theme, or clich or banal themes. Remember theme is only on aspect of a story.
