Primary target read and appreciate literature of the language. Key principles: the purpose of fl study to be able to read the literature, students should be able to translate one language into the other, oral communication is not the goal. Not the goal in this method, but can be in others: the primary skills to be developed are reading and writing, teacher is the authority. Not authority like police, but they are in charge when teaching something: students need to get the right answers, native language equivalents exist for all target language words. Challenging things don"t always translate well; shortened form, idioms, Whatcha doin? : attention to language similarities is crucial to learning, students need to learn about the form of the language, deductive grammar explanations are useful for teaching.
