Lecture 9: roman empire (not on first exam) Augustus caesar ruled the roman empire from 27 bc 14 ad. The roman empire was a world community , it brought together different kinds of groups and that was why it survived for so long. Roman empire didn"t care what you did as long as you paid your taxes and followed the rules. Palestine: region within the roman empire, area where the ancient hebrews (the jews) will have the largest civilization, 4 sects of judaism. Most important group in terms of authority had power and money upper class kept order. Went around and collected the taxes before the romans could do it believed in mosaic law = written code of behavior, but was very rigid and told you what to do. Most populous group of all the jews in palestine the regular people living day-to-day lives, paying taxes, farming believed in oral tradition believed that everyone should be practicing morality.
