JOUR 311 L1
We will be writing nonfiction
Feature stories are journalism
Everything is factual; nothing is made up
FAIR AND BALANCED
The most important step is making the topic fresh, dramatic, colorful and exciting
Make the topic fresh and new
You can do this by using different angles, people, etc
You need people who are going to be original
Tell the reader something they didn’t know
They are unusual (sometimes)
THEY HAVE ACTION
They have anecdotes
-story telling throughout the story
Know your target audience
This is even more important in magazine writing, where many feature stories are
published
It’s true no matter what platform, though
The details make stories original
People
Stories people tell (anecdotes) make it original
Action makes it original
Unique sources make it original
What pros do:
Research the publication
Learn the audience
Write for our market
Beginners do:
Find story they like
Write something familiar to them
Shop the story around and hope someone will buy it
Common mistakes:
1. Writing with what youre familiar with
2. Broad topics with no hook or angle
3. Failing to research properly or source it well
4. Writing without anecdotes
