PR 664 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: The Graphic, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Once you form a hypothesis you must specify 2 sorts of languages, connections between variables in the hypothesis. To demonstrate why each hypothesis or research question is true, this is considered the theoretical linkage. You have to show how the concepts are related empirically, this is considered the operational linkage. Theoretical linkages explain the logic of question and justify why you"re asking it. You can cite an existing theory and the explanations of that theory. If you"re working in an area in which the theory is not developed well, literature that exists can be cited to show similar results to those predicted by the hypothesis. Researchers have to be able to state the support for the hypothesis in their own words using their own logic. If the researcher can"t state one good reason why the hypothesis is true, then the hypothesis won"t receive empirical support most likely.
