Deviance is the violation of a norm. Deviance and crime can go hand in hand, but they need not. De nitions of deviance may be relative (depends on the situation) Opposed to absolute (wrong in all circumstances) Strain theory: society creates in all of us a need/desire for material possessions, not all of which we have the resources to obtain this creates strain for individuals. Theory of differential association: people"s behavior is a re ection of who they associate with, thus, deviance is a re ection of who one associates with. Control theory: deviance depends on the amount of social control one feels exerted. Effectiveness of social control based on 4 things: Labeling theory: deviance is socially constructed who & what get labeled deviant depends on how others react to the behavior in question. The census bureau distinguishes between households & families. Households: all persons who occupy a dwelling.
