Parents can teach skills outside of the classroom. 3 factors responsible for increased emphasis on family involvement. Parents want to be involved in education (pl 94-142) Educational effectiveness is enhanced when family is involved. Idea and nclb- involvement is key to success. Anger, guilt, depression , rejection of the child, overprotectiveness. Educators should not expect a parent to react a certain way. Caregiver- needs of the child can cause stress. Teacher- need more teaching to acquire a skill. Counselor- help the child cope with the disability. Behavior support specialist- have to become skilled behavior managers. Parent of siblings without disabilities- meet other children"s" needs. Information specialist- ensure others support their child"s dignity/acceptance. Advocate- advocate for effective educational services and opportunities. Treating parents like vulnerable clients instead of partners. They are life educated and know their child. General/special education systems intimidating to the family.
