Things have changed dramatically in the last 30 years. Tv producers and stage management are usually quite close. Sms need to have creative minds to have intuitive minds. Ask people who made things about how they work. How you"re prepared, your attitude, and sm kit is how you are different creatively. Call is a schedule, notes, etc: must be put out in a timely manner. Responsible for creating a binder that is prepared for the show (blocking). Ball state"s rules: no call can be before 7 and not after 10:30: responsible for starting and ending on time. The tone of the entire rehearsal/performance is on you. You"re responsible for making sure artistic integrity stays the same: having meetings with companies to make the same show as you did on opening night. Speaking like a director helps you talk to actors. You can"t give the actors money, you send the breakdown to production crew for that.
