What are the defining features of each style?
Sumerian- big eyes, static positions, standing
Akkadian- shallow relief, oftentimes there is writing that’s part of picture, hierarchy of scale, arratie
Assyrian: hierarchy of scale, narrative, more detail, clear register, writing is a band across the
picture/below the relief
Archaic- weird smile
Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and daughters
- Sunken relief (forms carved into the stone, not projecting out)
- Amarna style because of U shaped belly, elongated torsos and necks, the sun is associated with
Akhenaten (Aten is a sun god)), ankh is a symbol of life which the sun/ruler gives), loosely
monotheistic (everything gained from just one god)
- The writing inhabits the same space, the hieroglyphics is not as deep cut

Man and Centaur is more stylized/abstract than the Exekias vase (naturalistic/realistic).
