Session 7: origin of the family, part 3. Darwin"s question of why men marry women only considers male choice. Energy problems (only affect women) solved when australopithecus evolved into hominins. Lovejoy: energy problems solved by male provisioning model. Women and children stayed back, protected and provisioned by men. Men had monogamous access to having sex with one female. Meat from hunting gave more energy for brain size increase, led to more hunting. Nuclear family started because women exchanged sex for meat. Females could have children more often because they didn"t need to get food for children. home developed because males brought meat to one location. Generalized meat exchanged: men brought back larger carcasses than their family could eat before it went bad, created social relations because of sharing. Bipedalism removed estrus, females became permanently sexually receptive, did not encourage monogamy. Critique of graslund 1: signaling of ovulation didn"t disappear.
