Document Summary

Peter burger, (cid:498)on the problem of the autonomy of art in bourgeois society,(cid:499) Kant says that freedom of desire is a key freedom, therefore autonomy is the ability to express desire through art regardless of the state of bourgeois/capitalism. Sacral art > courtly art > bourgeois art. Sacral art is very religious and cult like, and the reception is collective. Courtly art is primarily a representation of an object by an individual but its for a collective audience. Bourgeois art marks a shift where its art about the individual, produced by an individual for an audience of an isolated individual. The problem with individual art is that its very exclusive and limits the universality of art to a smaller group, its no longer practical. It"s a form of spectatorship in that art is now removed from everyday life and has been glorified.
