Imagined a social order founded upon reason: advocate of education for women, not widely regarded in life / decades after death, work resurrected in mid/late. Women should decide how often and when to become pregnant by being abstinent. First form of birth control (widely known / used): women were attempting to control their own childbearing, sex separated from reproduction - sex as pleasurable started gaining traction in. Universal white male suffrage (could vote, regardless of how much property they owned: separate spheres ideology enabled self-definition of the middle class, nancy cott, historian of women"s history. Sought to limit or prohibit consumption of alcohol. First organization to establish a mass base around this issue.
