Document Summary

One of the faces of the progressive movement. Early pragmatist, along w/ james and dewey; she hugely influenced dewey+changed his mind about stuffs. Maurice hamington argued for her as a philosopher. Central idea in all her writing: the world and esp. Us is changing, w/ new people coming in all the time, yet the us has to maintain a certain gestalt about it; it has to remain a democracy. Hamington saw this as a different way of looking at progress; progress on a large, social scale, where everybody needs to come up, not just a group of ppl (like du bois) For addams, democracy must reach all people; this meant there had to be a lot of education, in and out of settlement. All her work was based on notion that you have to learn about and from other people in order to solve social issues and create a better democracy.
