PSYC BC 1119y Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Medial Forebrain Bundle, James Papez, Mammillary Body
Document Summary
Emotions have 4 general aspects: feelings, actions, physiological arousal, motivation theories of emotions. Cannon-bard theory: (centrally-centered)- brain simultaneously decides on the appropriate emotional response and activates the sympathetic system so that the body is ready for the appropriate actions stimulus physiological response + emotion brain circuits that mediate emotions. Medial forebrain bundle: large tract that ascends from the midbrain through the hypothalamus and sends axons to nucleus accumbens- important in value and reward. Cerebral cortex: appears to generally inhibit emotional responsiveness- if you remove the cortex, animals become impossible to work with because they are so angry- called decorticated rage. Papez"s circuit: james papez noted that destruction of a set of interconnected pathways would impair emotional processes/reactivity in humans and animals. Brain areas of papez"s circuit: mammillary bodies of hypothalamus, anterior thalamus, cingulate cortex, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, fornix. Paul maclean expanded this circuit to include: amygdala, olfactory bulb role of amygdala in emotion and fear.
