Document Summary

Put hard copy of final paper in prof seeley"s mailbox in psych department by noon on 12/16. The book is very ethnographic; thick description; rich, detailed description of the community. She"s also really good at telling story from two different points of view that are often mutually incomprehensible in a way that we can understand as readers. Helps us realize the subjectivity of science; how much medicine is actually based on certain beliefs rather than facts. Above all, the book is a study in power; clash of communities, one of which has huge social capital and is thought to hold authoritative knowledge, and the other whose intelligence and skills are devalued and who are disempowered. Shows how the theories we"ve been learning about play out in real life. You can write subjectively and still present something that seems balanced and fair; she achieves this beautifully in the book.
