The way that most people understand best. Think of the evolution of the food pyramid food plate. We should be accurately conveying and improving the message. Describes the center of a distribution of scores. Can be depicted by a bell shaped curve. Median: the middle of numerically organized scores. How far the scores tend to fall from the distribution"s center. We can measure how far scores fall from a distribution center, or how far sample means fall from the actual mean of the population. Think about getting college tests scores; it would be impossible to get all scores so you take scores from a sample/group in the population to represent the whole. For this reason, scientists sometimes refer to variability as errors. Range: where 100% or all of the scores fall. Interquartile range: where middle 50% of scores fall, narrows the range (if the sample was divided into quarters, the interquartile range would be the middle two quarters)
