American women in the 20th century day 5 - notes 9/21/19. Questions from last class: feminism, coined in france, end of 19th / beginning of 20th used in english, no legal segregation in seven sisters but a lot of policies / practice about admissions. I. e. only 2 african american women could go to barnard per year: dorothy height. Social as well as military / political: as opposed to european colonialism in africa (searching for precious metals / silver) - enslaved africans and brought them from africa to europe. Important to look at construction of the other that was used to justify actions: readings for today, outing program, placed indigenous girls in homes of white, middle class families, boarding schools. 1879 by richard pratt who served as headmaster for 25 years. Pratt believed that day schools weren"t as effective at assimilation - people needed to be fully removed from reservation.
