Sensory development: rapid pace, but not all at the same rate- touch is most developed, sight is least developed. Sensation: processing of basic info by sensory receptors in sense organs and brain. Perception: process of organizing and interpreting sensory info. Testing perception: paired-stimuli preference test- two stimuli paired- which does baby prefer, habituation procedures. Dishabituation, recovery: response-contingent testing procedures (reinforcement/consequence-based procedures- baby does something and then a stimulus is presented, i. e. sucking in a particular way->hearing cat in the hat) Newborns respond when they are touched on mouth, palms, feet. Have reflexes, respond to pain, can sense temperature. Infants" exploration of objects- younger babies put everything in their mouths, older babies (8 months) look at it, explore it, maybe put it in mouth later- even older babies imitate the ways adults play w/ toys: taste. Vegemite: have to be introduced to it before the age of 2 to learn to like it- sensitive period in flavor learning.
