North american archaeology began in the 19th century and was related to ethnography. Post-depression public archaeology was the beginning of modern archaeology. Today"s archaeology is a mix of processual, post-processual, and newer approaches. Antiquarianism was the precursor of modern archaeology: archaeology was popular among the wealthy. By the late 18th century, collecting ancient artifacts was a popular pastime because it complemented the classical education of the time. Found in 1799 in the nile river delta: the british got it from the french in the treaty of alexandria in 1801. Throughout the 19th century, museums and countries went to great lengths to get monuments and other antiques. British museum: the greeks created a museum centered around reproductions.
