Document Summary
Central nervous system (cns) contains the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns) are the nerves going out/away from the cns. Efferent neuron: transmits information away from the cns out to effectors (muscle, glands, other neurons) whose cell body is located in the cns. Afferent/sensory neuron: brings sensory information to the cns from sensory receptors. Cell body of afferent neuron is located in the dorsal root ganglia, a collection of cell bodies outside the cns. Visceral senses (sensations from internal organs or blood vessels). Interneurons are located mainly in the cns and serve to interconnect neurons allowing for integration of sensory information and motor output. Glial cells- most numerous in the nervous system. They provide physical and biochemical support to neurons. One neuron per schwann cell, but one neuron can have multiple schwann cells. Also secret neurotrophic factors that help maintain neurons and guide them during repair and development. One oligodendrocyte can create myelin for several neurons.
