Document Summary

General features: vibration of earth, elastic rebound. The spring back of rocks: vibrations occur as rock turns back to its original shape. Focus: place within the earth where earthquake happens. Epicenter: the place on crust where the earth quake shakes. Duration of vibrations: 10 sec vs 3 mins long, longer vs shorter. Frequency of the waves: pulses of waves that travel through the city, building are an upside down pendulum, higher building, higher swing. Nature of material upon which the structure rests: (cid:862)build you(cid:396) house upon the (cid:396)ock(cid:863) The design of structure: half can be built on rock and the other half on shore, will lean during earthquake. Liquefaction: saturated material turns fluid, feet walking in wet sand. Richter scale: 0-10, more likely on lesser scale, measure of amount of energy released. Mercalli scale: measure of the amount of damage of an earthquake, 1-12, not on test.
