Conversion also sort of sealed the deal on some economic stuff: sort of looking up to portugal and kongo as model. First big fallout with portugal and kongo slave trade issue. North africa and middle east (2/3) americas (1/3: at origin, slavery was used for criminals/prisoners of war, you could be used as a slave in your own culture or sold. 11-18 million africans enslaved by arab slave traders between 650-1900 ad: this slavery is not the same type of slavery as what we thnk of in america. Alfonso writers letter to portuguese king: you can"t just enslave our law-abiding citizens at random: very respectful and formal in the letter.
