PHI 3339 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Freedom Of Religion, King James Version, Divine Right Of Kings
Document Summary
Useful to look at what the founders were reading: the bible. We have fallen from grace; there"s something wrong with us; the fall. We are prone to sin makes us skeptical of human authority. Men (people) tend to break the law. Political relationship hierarchy: god man creation. When man substitutes god, everything falls apart. Affects man"s relationship with god; man"s relationship to creation. Adam and eve (created in image of god) Sets them apart from rest of creation. Men now long for original state before fall; deeply political desire. After the fall, a desire for dominion/to rule is evident. Creates acceptance of government, but distrust comes soon; corruption. Deuteronomy list of duties for king to be good; it"s possible if you"re perfect . Israelites want king; god warns them; king displays badness. Old testament: divine rule through moses, then monarchy. You shall worship no other god before me; very clear no idolatry. Ties to puritan set up in new world.
