Democracy is not necessarily superior to authoritarian regimes in economic standards. The quality of governance is less efficient in democracies. We should not expect democracy to be more peaceful or orderly than authoritarian. People are often more protected in authoritarian regimes. Democratic freedoms (civil liberties, rights, etc. ) provide less protection. Existed in the 20th centuries in very few countries and for no longer than 3 decades. Absence of any limits on leader; no legal frameworks. Total control of public"s thinking; reality constructed for people. Stalin drew favor by establishing a party (communist party), a personality cult, and an ideological path/following (marx engels lenin stalin) Reliance on mobilization of people (march on great square) Party required participation; they pick our dissenters. No intrusion in private life like in totalitarianism. Huge social costs; fear of protest; acceptance of reforms. More effective in producing economic growth in short periods of time. Often run as coalitions (several people making decisions)
