It"s every man for himself; self-defense/interest can never be given up. According to hobbes, you can never give up your right to self-defense, survival: when you enter a social contract, you"re giving up all rights (transferring them to this artificial body) except for self-defense. In entering a social contract, you"re giving up certain liberties in exchange for security of some type. There is no judge between the people and the sovereign: all mediation is actually going through the sovereign. U. s. court system the sovereign is still technically in control. Sovereign is made up of the people: an embodiment of common good and the popular will of the people, you enter a social contract, establish a sovereign. You are bound up in sovereignty by the social contract.
