Document Summary

Can metastasize to other parts of the body. Second most common cause of death in the us. Signs and symptoms can vary depending on location, size, and invasion. Normal cells divide and grow in controlled manner: faster when young, slowing as you age. Cells in the aged traditional only divide to replace dying cells or to repair injury. Uncontrolled cell division and growth results in abnormal tissue called a tumor or neoplasm: can be malignant or benign. Benign tumors: non-life threatening, grow slowly, does not invade other tissues or metastasize, tend to be smooth and symmetrical, resemble cells of tissue of origin, often encapsulated, making removal easier, do not tend to return after removal. Malignant tumors: life threatening, grow rapidly. Invade other tissues and metastasize to other parts of the body: travel through blood or lymph, do not have a uniform appearance, non-encapsulated, making excision more difficult, tend to recur following excision.
