Gastroesophageal reflux disease: heartburn, stomach acids escape through cardiac sphincter into esophagus, antacids, h2 blocker, ppi, avoid large meals, alcohol. Barrett"s esophagus: change in tissue of esophagus due to chronic acid exposure, can be a pre-cancerous sign. If esophagus is insufficient, may need feeding tubes placed. Inflammation of the stomach and intestines: anorexia, n/v/d, may be abrupt onset or develop over time, often brought on by food poisoning, symptoms onset 6-8 hours after eating contaminated foods, e. coli, salmonella, treat causative agents. Can be idiopathic, but often accompanies dm. Treat with small meals, medications that increase motility. If the root cause is structural, surgical resolution is possible. Often associated with long-term h. pylori infection. Often results in pernicious anemia as stomach no longer is able to secrete intrinsic factor.
