APSY2240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Status Quo, Episodic Memory, Kindergarten
Document Summary
In infancy and child hood we are continuously gathering information, even though we may not be constructing it. For many children, the age 2 is the time where autobiographical self emerges- simple and small stories about themselves- like how their day was what happened in their day. They start to share their experiences with others episodic memories. Over time, it becomes more sophisticated by recalling a few scenes that happened, not just one. By kindergarten, most kids have the theory of mind- a set of working hypotheses about how other minds and our own work. The understanding that people have diferent desires and ants in their minds and then they act upon it. They begin to learn that certain people have diferent beliefs around the world. But this does not develop in isolation- within the social context. Parents typically encourage children to talk about their personal experiences as soon as they start talking.
