BIOL3030 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Parathyroid Gland, Hypocalcaemia, Osteoclast
Document Summary
Straining on bone- changing length of original length. How much stress is applied to bone. If you have stress there will be positive remodeling. Decreasing stress and strain, bone will resorb, and the other way around. Ex: if you force stress on bone, the cross sectional area will grow. Bone is heavy so if you can get rid of it sometimes it will be easier. Without calcium you won"t have proper nerve conduction. Bones will give up calcium if you need it. If there is too much calcium your body will tell you to deposit it into the bones. Calcitonin mediates the lowering of calcium levels in the body when they are too high. Vertebrates need more calcium due to activity. Their shell has calcium in it, drawdown calcium from it. Mother chicken gets calcium from bone that is later transferred to egg. Once chicken eats something, calcium gets stored immediately in the bone, in the medullary bone.
