This includes water usage for industrial, agricultural, and personal purposes. The per capita use in the ua is higher than many nations (us places second for per capita availability and irst for use). Per capita use is far diferent from per capita availability. Conservation of water in europe far exceeds that of the us. On a global basis, 67% of per capita water use is agricultural, with 9% going to household uses. The us safe drinking water act (passed in 1974) authorizes the epa (environmental protection agency) to set, monitor, and enforce national health-based standards for many contaminants in municipal water supplies. Chemists are able to detect and monitor more compounds and microbes at lower and lower levels of concentrations through sophisticated instruments.
