Document Summary
Latin comes from latium, which was a place in italy inhabited by romans. The empire expanded excessively, and soon latin became a written language (between 80bc to. Spoken latin varied heavily from region to region. Each place had different slang or colloquial terms, and different dialects present in the region greatly influenced the variations. On the other hand, rome set the standard for written latin, therefore allowing little wiggle room for any dissimilarities. The standard was set by the roman texts produced during this particular period. For instance, almost of its entire population was comprised of slaves, whereas in today"s society that is very far from reality. In addition, it was a patriarchal society, meaning that the men typically ran the show. Women had little to no power in society. On top of that, gladiator shows were extremely popular amongst the romans, and the emperors would sometimes have as many as 5,000 pairs fighting against each other.
