The way that we create our self concept from the things that we hear. Men are less likely to seek mental health counseling. People know and judge the you who communicates with them- not the you you keep inside. We manage the way in which we present ourselves. Impression management: the way we manage the impressions we leave on people. Present a certain self in the right context. When you communicate with others, you present a public self, or face. Embarrassment can result when information arises that contradicts your face. A mask is a public self designed to conceal your private self. Requires that we are self aware, to know what we want to show. We craft the presentation of ourselves through interpersonal relationships. Intimacy: the feeling of closeness and union between us and our partners creating through revealing the self. Can contradict the way we want people to see us.
